UPCOMING EVENT
Media Technology Days with the AMWA
Hosted by FOX Networks Engineering & Operations, Los Angeles
May 20th – 21st 2014
Los Angeles, California, USA
Day 1 - Modern Media System Development Workshop | View Schedule
Open to everyone
By attending this full day of discussion and presentations, you may be surprised to learn just how radically the world of software development and service oriented architectures have evolved over the last ten years. To a large extent, media companies and vendors have continued with ‘business as usual’, as the fundamental infrastructure of software development has changed beneath their feet.
During this workshop, AMWA members will present information on rapid software prototyping environments, tools and languages that can all be leveraged to allow our industry to ‘ride the core’ of rapid software development.
Who should attend the workshop?
- System Architects
- Facility Managers
- Technology Strategists
- Software Writers
What will you gain?
- Insight into the world of rapid software development
- Understanding of its impact on the media industry
Is this event open to the industry at large?
- This workshop is open to both AMWA members and non-members
One of the effects of this fundamental change is that the deliverables produced by organizations such as the AMWA must change. In order for us to remain relevant, and in order for us to produce artefacts such as Specifications and tools that help rather than hinder developers, the AMWA must produce outputs that are directly usable in this new development environment.
Issues of the Day
This session is devoted to exploring the world of modern software development. While still to be confirmed, we anticipate the following presentations:
Richard Friedel, EVP and GM, FOX NE&O and Clyde Smith, SVP New Technology, FOX Networks Engineering & Operations - Introduction, welcome and observations on the importance of rapid software development environments.
Speaker to be announced - Cognizant, a discussion on the implications of the sea change that is upon us in the areas of software development and media systems from someone who has experience on the ground with these sorts of systems.
Dr. Richard Cartwright, Principal Software Architect of Quantel’s R&D Department, will present information on modern software development tools that can be used to dramatically reduce the amount of work required to implement specifications in products, and will also talk about tools that can be used to provide automated testing.
Jim Trainor, the Chair of the AMWA’ s Technical Steering Committee, will give a concrete demonstration on how ‘riding the core’ can lead to extremely rapid deployment of software using services such as FIMS. Jim will show how, in a few hours, it is possible to go from accessing documentation on a service to having an initial implementation up and running. This is not an abstract discussion, but an opportunity to ‘look over the shoulder’ of a programmer as he incorporates the use of a service into running code.
Phil Tudor, Principal R&D Engineer, BBC, will discuss the work his team is doing regarding the definition of conformance rules for the popular AS-11 DPP specification from a text document into XML, and how this work will potentially aid in the testing and acceptance of files for delivery to U.K. broadcasters.
Once presentations are finished, we will have an open discussion regarding the implications of the information that has been presented during the day.
Call for Presentations
A portion of this meeting will be devoted to members. This is a return to the spirit of the AAF Engineering meetings we held many years ago, and is an opportunity for members to contribute presentation material on issues that concern them. To that end, we are issuing a call for presentations. If you would like to make a presentation on any topic at this meeting, please contact Jim Trainor at [email protected]. It is also an opportunity for group discussion of technical issues related to the media industry. If there is a topic you would like to explore during the meetings, please contact Jim Trainor.
Day 2 Technical Steering Committee Day | View Schedule
